What Are You Thankful For?

Happy Friday to one and all!  I kinda liked the celebration theme begun with last week's newsletter so I decided to continue it.  Instead of the title, "Editor's Note" each topic will have a title--kinda like a warning flag, if you will.

I figure by issue #5 y'all have figured out that I'm the editor, which makes the title a bit redundant, doesn't it?  Anyway, let's get started:

  • We're still growing steadily - (thank God!)

  • My computer came home - (thank God!)

  • We're back on track - (thank God!)

  • We woke up this morning - (thank God!)

  • And it's definitely Friday - (say it wit meh now-- THANK GOD!)

Seriously, though, now that we've finally gotten started (this newsletter originated 11/24/2004 as exhale) and we're back on track.  Now I can take a little time to elucidate on our theme scripture "... cast down, but not destroyed."

I'm sure you can probably tell by the title, where we're heading, but for the next few newsletters, we will concentrate on celebrating, who we are, where we are, and how we are, before we get to really delving beneath the surface to start (or continue for some of us) "fixing" ourselves up.

With that in mind, I've begun recommending books for each newsletter.  Different styles of writing to celebrate our differences and the way we all absorb information.  I'm sure between the books, the websites and future interviewees sharing their practical coping methods, there'll be something to appeal to everyone's method of learning.

Our upcoming articles:

  • You Are Not An Accident! (In this issue)

  • You Can Forgive!

  • You Are Worthy of Love!

Peace,
Dee

You Are Not An Accident!

I am your Creator. You were in My care even before you were born. ~Isaiah 44:2a

Day 2 of reading The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren.

How many times in life do we rail at the circumstances of our birth? Resent the parents we ended up with? The body parts that don't quite work or fit? Or maybe it's the color of our skin or the part of the world in which we live that we take issue with.

As the last of eight children, with a six year difference between the closest sibling and myself, it really wasn't too hard to figure out that I was an unplanned addition to the family tree. That and the fact that I'd heard it mentioned on numerous occasions. Add to that the fact that I was born in the West Indies, and while my family wasn't poor, we were certainly not living large. I recall the restrictive atmosphere and the feeling of not fitting in because we were "Spiritual Baptists" (whatever that meant).

Quote for Success

Testimony is an integral part of the Black religious tradition. It is the occasion where the believer stands before the community of faith in order to give account of the hope that is in him or her.

--James Cone, 1993

Call for Submissions:

Dee411 is now a paying market!  We may be on the low end, but paying we will be.

As mentioned in the description, this newsletter is geared toward a specific audience: Sufferers, survivors, coping/living with someone who has been abused and preventative measures (i.e. the signs of abuse, how you can help)

Abuse affects many aspects of our lives:

  • Self-esteem- How we see ourselves (e.g. overweight, anorexic, insignificant, unworthy)

  • Attitude - How we carry ourselves (e.g. timidity, hardness, anger, unforgiveness)

  • Mental health - How our psyche reacts (e.g. depression, promiscuity, frigidity)

  • Habits - How do we compensate? (e.g. overspending, hoarding, controlling, lying, cheating, indecisive, inconsistent)

Articles on any of the above are acceptable.  Although informative, the tone shouldn't be overly formal and should end with bulleted action steps or a resource of some kind.  State all sources of information. Statistics are a plus.
